In a weaving the warp runs up and down in the vertical direction. (The weft, not visible in an Andean weaving, will cross back and forth, from right to left, then left to right.)
In traditional Andean weaving the warp threads are set close to each other so that the pattern will be created out of the vertical warp threads. This technique is called "warp pickup."
Weavers in Chinchero use sticks for creating patterns from warp yarns. Villages in the Andes have developed a great variety of weaving techniques which interest textile researchers.
