Shepherds' Slings

"Special Occasion" Textile Pieces

For fiestas Andean people create elaborate textiles, often three-dimensional. The alpaca tassel on the left fits on a "dance sling" which the dancer whirls.

The second textile on the left is a finely woven ceremonial dance weaving: its long warp splits into several sections, splits again and again, a virtuoso performance by the weaver.

Men and boys braid elaborate shepherd's slings. The alpaca sling in this display includes a tapestry-woven "cradle" for placing the stone.
