In the Courtyard

The art of weaving is important to many modern Inca families as it was to their ancestors five hundred years ago. Every traditional family in Peru has contained at least one weaver.

All her life, including her years as a university student in the 1980s, Nilda, her family and friends in Chinchero created fine weavings for themselves and their families.

In villages like Chinchero, some boys and men also weave.

The murals in the background were painted by Angel Callañaupa Alvarez, whose paintings are featured in the current book “Beyond the Stones: Folk Tales and Stories of Inca Life” by Elizabeth VanBuskirk.
