Variety of Colors from Natural Dyes

Variety of Colors from Natural DyesAngel opens a bag with wool he has dyed using flowers, roots and minerals. His work is part of an experimental project. Most weavers today use chemical dyes to color their wool.

Chemical dyes were developed at the turn of the last century and are now being used by weavers in all parts of the world. With some chemical dyes it is possible to get fine and lasting colors. However the chemical dyeing process presents new challenges for traditional weavers–an intricate weaving which takes months to make can be diminished by the use of poor dyes. The Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco has been invited to hold dyeing workshops in weaving villages.
